Stocks for the holiday stocking?

December 20, 2008

What is going to be in your stocking? With the holidays around the corner, many investors are checking their bank accounts and brokerage statements to gauge how much they may spend on gifts this year.  That could be a problem from the looks of this Grinchly market. According to the American Research Group, Inc. consumers are planning to spend approximately $523 for gifts this holiday season.

Perhaps it is a good year to consider giving your children or family members something that has the opportunity to appreciate over time.  Giving the gift of stock certificates or shares of a mutual fund may not be quite as exciting as a Nintendo Wii, Tickle Me Elmo or an Apple iTouch but we all know that young children rarely remember the gifts they received when they were 1 – 6 years old.  In fact, many of these gifts will end up in one of several places: the garbage, a garage sale, or in a storage closet.

While you may believe that buying a stock gift may be difficult, too expensive, not practical or just a bad idea considering market conditions, there are some benefits that you may want to look at.

If You Want to Make GOBS of Money - Read This…

December 19, 2008

I just reviewed Brian Shannon’s new book on MSN TopStocks. It really is a terrific reference to help understand the world of technical analysis, not to mention helping you a better trader.

This is best accomplished by using the strategy of technical analysis Technical analysis can be an intimidating subject and it is often made more confusing than it needs to be with the addition of some esoteric oscillators and indicators. Read more

Strategy Lab: Tough to Hit a Volatile Market (up 14%)

December 19, 2008

If you have been following our progress, you will know that, over the past few weeks, there have been many positions that we added and subsequently exited as our plan for buying and selling amid the volatility has worked out well. Of the dozen or so positions that initially had been discussed, all but four have been executed.

If you recall, I had made the suggestion that it appeared that a capitulation point had been hit on the afternoon of Nov. 20. Since, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($INDU) has added almost 1,400 points (18%) and the S&P 500 Index ($INX) 160 (20%). The next day, I added several infrastructure stocks to the portfolio that could benefit from an economic stimulus plan to rebuild America. Read more

Rule 1: You Buy GE, Not Sell it…Right?

December 19, 2008

General Electric (GE) - you have heard of them right? That little company that makes light bulbs and other necessary items has been under siege recently. Most investors, especially those that have been in the game for decades usually have a position in the stock for years and have never thought about selling…until now. In fact, when I ask most why they have GE, they usually tell me that it is something they always had, often time due to an inheritance.

But now, the company that just received a $3 billion deal from the Iraqi government and the potential for an unlimited amount of orders of energy efficient light bulbs via the Obama restructuring plan is looking, well…weak. How is it that the financial took this once beloved company down in less than a year?
