30 Stocks added to “Protect-me” list

According to CNBC, 30 stocks have been added to the list of companies that are now banned from short trading. This is obviously the result of a good amount of lobbying and fear.

From CNBC:

The New York Stock Exchange said Monday it will ban short-selling of 30 stocks with large financial services operations.

These stocks were not included in a list of 799 stocks temporarily banned from short-selling that was issued by the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday.

The action by the NYSE follows a new order by the SEC that grants each national securities exchange the authority to identify additional listed companies that meet certain criteria.
As a result of this action, the following companies are being added to the list:

  3. OCN….Ocwen Financial Corporation
  4. KBW….KBW, Inc.
  5. GFG….Guaranty Financial Group Inc.
  6. MFG…. Mizuho Financial Group, Inc.
  7. FMR…. First Mercury Financial Corporation
  8. STC….Stewart Information Services Corporation
  9. FCF…. First Commonwealth Financial Corporation
  10. MTB…M&T Bank Corporation
  11. DFS…Discover Financial Services
  12. BMO….Bank of Montreal
  13. TD….. Toronto Dominion Bank
  14. CM…..Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce
  15. FMD….The First Marblehead Corporation
  16. BBV…..Banco Bilbao Vizcaya SA
  17. CIB….. BanColombia SA
  18. LM….. Legg Mason, Inc.
  19. NFP…..National Financial Partners Corp.
  20. AXP…..American Express Company

    Cash is a position. I am taking my ball and going home. I don’t like playing the game when I don’t know the rules.

    What is the impact of the targeted ban on short sales on the Ultrashort ETFs? I currently have small positions in SKF, DUG and SDS in an IRA portfolio. Up until now, this was a convenient way to hedge an IRA account because my IRA custodian does not allow me to short directly. Could the ban possibly cause the SKF to trade at a premium (or just the opposite)?

    Thanks for some great podcasts over the past few months.
