How could one stock (CROX) prove this thesis wrong? It is an attempt to discuss the broad effect of massive buybacks. I tend to be suspicious of this trend. Another effect is that all those extra shares sitting around can be a temptation to (inappropriate) acquisitions. Another question is whether they distort (upwards) the huge payoffs that top corporate brass have been receiving.

The answer to the CROX issue was probably from the post on CROX that is commented on by R in the wrong place. I responded to it here. BUT, aside from that, you are correct in that there are several issues at hand that make this a big problem. We spoke about it in great length on the upcoming podcast that will be posted late tonight

CROX is becoming a real mystery in that while you still have to love the numbers, but wonder how long it can last. I am still in the camp of long term fad that will eventually prove a problem to shareholders. But I will not go down with the ship if wrong..... As I teach and practice, stick to disciplines on up and down and investing will be rewarding.

Looks like CROX proved you wrong eh? I don't own any shares, but it'd be great if you touched on their upped guidance in your next podcast. I know you touched on the fact that there are lots of replicas overseas, but isn't "imitation the greatest form of flattery"?

The Big Picture - Barry Ritholtz had an article and info on this at
http://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/2006/01/an_unprecedente.html . That was written in 2006, and seems that nothing has changed.

Is anyone concerned with the buyback issue?
